Course Requirements
Qualifying Exam
Pre-requisites
The student who is eligible to apply for DQE should have passed 4 courses (the average grade ≥B⁻) ; the courses should include at least 2 Core Courses.
The application ( )should be submitted to the NTU-MST Office 2 months before the date of DQE.
DQE should be finished within 2 academic years or 4 academic semesters.
Schedule
In case of failure in the DQE, a student can retake DQE only once.
Students are suggested to apply for DQE before 3/31 (for spring semester) or 9/31 (for fall semester).
Format
The examination is in a form of oral presentation to a committee, in which the members are suggested by student’s thesis advisor. The committee consists of 3 members, excluding the thesis advisor.
A proposal should be related to the research topic, in which the abstract, research background, experimental procedures, results and discussion, and reference are clearly stated, should be sent to DQE committee members 7 days before the exam.
Graduation Requirements
Course Requirements
The student has to achieve all the Course Requirements.
Publication Requirement
The student has to achieve one of the following conditions:Be the first author of a paper published in a journal, which is ranked within 15% in a subject category of SCI.
Be the author of two papers, which are published in journals ranked within 40% in their subject categories of SCI, and be the first author of one of the papers.
Be the author of three papers, which are published in SCI journals, and be the first author of one of the papers.
Dissertation Defense Examination Pre-requisites
The student who is eligible to apply for Dissertation Defense Examination should have fulfilled the Course Requirements and passed the Doctoral Qualifying Examination (DQE).
The application ( ) should be approved by student’s thesis advisor and submitted to the NTU-MST office, attached with summary of graduate studies, 2 months ago ( ).
Format
The examination is in a form of oral presentation. The Dissertation Defense Examination committee is organized by the thesis advisor. The committee consists of at least 5 members (including the advisor), and at least 1/3 of the members should be non-NTU faculty.
Students have to finish thesis dissertation and send it to the Dissertation Defense Examination committee members 15 days before the examination.
