Course Requirements

Required Credits Course Category Course Description
3 Compulsory Courses Colloquium 1 credit per semester; 3 credits are required before DDE.
2 Special Topics 1 credit per semester; 2 credits are required in the first year.
2 Seminar 1 credit per semester; 2 credits are required before DQE.
1 Doctoral Thesis 1 credit is required before DDE.

  1. At least 18 credits of NTU courses in English are required. (Core courses + Elective courses)
  2. At least 2 Core Courses approved by NTU-MST must be included.
  3. At least 4 courses before Doctoral Qualifying Exam (DQE); (these courses should include at least 2 Core Courses.)
  4. Elective Courses should be in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, and life science. The listed Core Courses can also be selected as the Elective Courses.
  5. At most 2 courses can be waived for the credits of the Elective Courses.
  6. If there is any course which you would like to take and is not on the elective course list, you can discuss with your supervisor and propose it to the committee. 
Others Ethics At least 6 hours are required.
Elementary Chinese International students have to take 2 semester courses of “Chinese” within the first two years of their enrollment.


Progress Report

Submit progress report ( ) to the NTU-MST office every semester in the first two years of enrollment. The due time is January 15 in fall semester and July 15 in the spring semester.


Selection of Advisor

Select the thesis advisor and complete the Advisor Agreement Form ( ) within the first year of enrollment.


Qualifying Exam

Pre-requisites

The student who is eligible to apply for DQE should have passed 4 courses (the average grade ≥B⁻) ; the courses should include at least 2 Core Courses.

The application (  )should be submitted to the NTU-MST Office 2 months before the date of DQE.

DQE should be finished within 2 academic years or 4 academic semesters.

Schedule

In case of failure in the DQE, a student can retake DQE only once.

Students are requested to apply for DQE before 3/31 (for spring semester) or 9/31 (for fall semester).

Format

The examination is in a form of oral presentation to a committee, in which the members are suggested by student’s thesis advisor. The committee consists of 3 members, excluding the thesis advisor.

A proposal should be related to the research topic, in which the abstract, research background, experimental procedures, results and discussion, and reference are clearly stated, should be sent to DQE committee members 7 days before the exam.

Requirements

  1. Course Requirements:The student has to achieve all the Course Requirements.
  2. Doctoral Qualifying Exam (DQE):The student must pass the DQE.
  3. Publication Criteria:The student must meet one of the following publication criteria: 
    • Be the first author of a paper published in a journal, which is ranked within 15% in a subject category of SCI.
    • Be the author of two papers, which are published in journals ranked within 40% in their subject categories of SCI, and be the first author of one of the papers.
    • Be the author of three papers, which are published in SCI journals, and be the first author of one of the papers.

Format of Dissertation Defense Examination (DDE)

The examination is in a form of oral presentation. The Dissertation Defense Examination committee is organized by the thesis advisor. The committee consists of at least 5 members (including the advisor), and at least 1/3 of the members should be non-NTU faculty.

Students have to finish thesis dissertation and send it to the Dissertation Defense Examination committee members 15 days before the examination.
